This approach ensures that all students, regardless of learning style, receive explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction in key areas, including:

Phonology

Understanding and manipulating sounds in spoken language

Morphology

Recognizing how word parts (prefixes, suffixes, roots) contribute to meaning

Orthography

Learning spelling patterns and conventions

Syntax & Semantics

Developing sentence structure and meaning

Comprehension & Discourse

Engaging critically with text and ideas

Our Literacy Program: The Five Pillars of Reading

Our structured literacy program is built on five essential components, each designed to develop proficient, confident readers and writers:

  1. Phonemic Awareness & Phonics
In the early years, we use Little Learners Love Literacy and Decodable Readers to explicitly teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling. This structured, engaging approach ensures a strong foundation in reading and writing.
  2. Morphology
From Year 3 onwards, students transition from phonics to a deeper understanding of word structure. Through morphology instruction, they explore roots, prefixes, and suffixes, expanding their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
  3. Fluency
Fluency is key to reading success. We ensure students develop the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with expression, making reading more engaging and improving overall comprehension.
  4. Vocabulary
A rich vocabulary is essential for communication and academic success. We provide explicit vocabulary instruction, helping students connect words to meaning and confidently engage in academic discussions.
  5. Comprehension
The ultimate goal of reading is understanding. We equip students with the skills to decode text, analyze its meaning, and engage critically with ideas, fostering a lifelong love of reading and deep thinking.

Little Learners Love Literacy: A Strong Start

From Foundation to Year 2, we use Little Learners Love Literacy, a structured synthetic phonics program that makes learning to read both systematic and engaging. This approach goes beyond books—it incorporates games, crafts, music, and movement to make literacy instruction exciting and memorable.

Why Our Approach Matters

A strong start in literacy opens the door to all future learning. Our structured, explicit, and research-backed approach ensures that every child—especially those at risk of reading difficulties—receives the instruction they need to thrive. By building these skills systematically, we give our students the confidence and capability to engage with increasingly complex texts, express their ideas clearly, and become lifelong readers and writers.

Numeracy

At Skye Primary School, our vision for mathematics education is to ignite a passion for learning through an engaging, challenging, and enjoyable curriculum. We believe that confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking are the foundations of strong mathematical learning. Our goal is to ensure that all students develop deep understanding, fluency, and problem-solving skills that empower them to apply mathematics in meaningful ways.

Our Approach to Mathematics

We are committed to building a strong conceptual foundation in mathematics by focusing on key ‘big ideas’ that underpin all mathematical learning:
