Literacy
Building Strong, Confident Readers and Writers
At Skye Primary School, every child deserves the highest quality literacy education—one that nurtures both skill and a love of reading and writing. Grounded in the latest research and best practices, our approach ensures that all students develop the strong foundations needed for lifelong literacy success
Embracing Structured Literacy
We are committed to high-impact, evidence-based literacy instruction, continuously refining our practice to align with the latest research. Our approach is built on Structured Literacy, a proven framework grounded in the Science of Reading (SOR). This method ensures that students systematically develop essential literacy skills, including decoding, encoding, and language comprehension, setting them up for long-term success.
The Science of Reading in Action
Structured Literacy is the practical application of the Science of Reading, an extensive body of research on how children learn to read and write. This approach ensures that all students, regardless of learning style, receive explicit, systematic, and cumulative instruction in key areas, including:
Phonology
Understanding and manipulating sounds in spoken language
Morphology
Recognizing how word parts (prefixes, suffixes, roots) contribute to meaning
Orthography
Learning spelling patterns and conventions
Syntax & Semantics
Developing sentence structure and meaning
Comprehension & Discourse
Engaging critically with text and ideas
Our Literacy Program: The Five Pillars of Reading
Our structured literacy program is built on five essential components, each designed to develop proficient, confident readers and writers:
- Phonemic Awareness & Phonics
In the early years, we use Little Learners Love Literacy and Decodable Readers to explicitly teach phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling. This structured, engaging approach ensures a strong foundation in reading and writing. - Morphology
From Year 3 onwards, students transition from phonics to a deeper understanding of word structure. Through morphology instruction, they explore roots, prefixes, and suffixes, expanding their vocabulary and comprehension skills. - Fluency
Fluency is key to reading success. We ensure students develop the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with expression, making reading more engaging and improving overall comprehension. - Vocabulary
A rich vocabulary is essential for communication and academic success. We provide explicit vocabulary instruction, helping students connect words to meaning and confidently engage in academic discussions. - Comprehension
The ultimate goal of reading is understanding. We equip students with the skills to decode text, analyze its meaning, and engage critically with ideas, fostering a lifelong love of reading and deep thinking.
Little Learners Love Literacy: A Strong Start
From Foundation to Year 2, we use Little Learners Love Literacy, a structured synthetic phonics program that makes learning to read both systematic and engaging. This approach goes beyond books—it incorporates games, crafts, music, and movement to make literacy instruction exciting and memorable.
Why Our Approach Matters
A strong start in literacy opens the door to all future learning. Our structured, explicit, and research-backed approach ensures that every child—especially those at risk of reading difficulties—receives the instruction they need to thrive. By building these skills systematically, we give our students the confidence and capability to engage with increasingly complex texts, express their ideas clearly, and become lifelong readers and writers.
Numeracy
At Skye Primary School, we believe every child can succeed in mathematics when teaching is clear, structured and grounded in evidence. We are committed to ensuring that all students develop strong foundations through explicit instruction, purposeful practice, and meaningful application.
A Systematic and Explicit Approach
Research shows that students learn mathematics best when new concepts are taught explicitly and step-by-step. At Skye Primary School, this means:
- Clear explanations and worked examples
- Carefully sequenced learning from Foundation to Year 6
- Guided practice with immediate feedback
- Consistent instructional routines across classrooms
Our curriculum is deliberately structured so that mathematical knowledge builds cumulatively. Students develop accuracy first, then fluency, and then the ability to apply their learning flexibly to solve complex problems.
Building Strong Foundations
Mathematics learning is cumulative; success in later concepts depends on mastery of earlier ones. We prioritise:
- Deep understanding of number and place value
- Automatic recall of essential facts
- Fluent use of efficient written algorithms
- Strong fractional and multiplicative thinking
Through daily practice and carefully designed review, students store key knowledge in long-term memory, allowing them to tackle increasingly complex problems with confidence.
High Expectations for Every Student
We believe that effective mathematics teaching builds confidence and prevents maths anxiety. Our coordinated, whole-school approach ensures:
- Protected daily time for mathematics
- Consistent, high quality curriculum materials and lesson structures
- Regular assessment to identify gaps and provide timely support
- Extension opportunities for students ready to move ahead
